The Story

Before Pawfect Witness™ had a name, there were three animals.

Fi Chai taught us what it meant to walk beside an animal through a lifetime. Fagu showed us that grief could become a reason to open our hearts again. Maji taught us to look for the lives that no one else could see.

Together, they changed the way we understood love, loss, and care. They also helped turn something deeply personal into Pawfect Witness™.

Fi Chai, Fagu, and Maji
Fi Chai during the life we shared

01 · Fi Chai

Fi Chai taught us what it meant to stay.

Fi Chai was our first dog. He shared seventeen years of life with us, through changing homes, changing seasons, and the ordinary routines that slowly became a life together.

He taught us that companionship was not one extraordinary moment. It was the choice to remain beside one another, year after year. It was responsibility, patience, presence, and knowing when someone needed us without words.

We stayed beside him until the final second of his life. By then, he had shaped not only our home, but also the way we understood devotion.

A witness before the name

When we married, Fi Chai was the only one there.

There were no guests and no wedding party. Only the two of us were there, with Fi Chai standing beside us.

We were not trying to make a statement about animals or create a new kind of ceremony. We could not imagine getting married without him. He was not there as decoration. He was there because he belonged to our family.

Years later, we would understand that Pawfect Witness™ may have begun in that quiet moment, long before we knew what to call it.

After Fi Chai

When he left, we did not know where all that love could go.

Losing the first animal we had loved through an entire lifetime brought a long and heavy grief. Fi Chai could not be replaced, and we were not looking for another animal to take his place.

The love did not end when his life ended. It left us carrying something we did not yet know how to release or transform.

Then we met Fagu.

Fagu and the journey that brought him home

02 · Fagu

Someone else had already refused to give up on him.

Fagu was living in China when a traffic accident left him severely injured. His previous owner brought him to a veterinary hospital and requested euthanasia. The veterinarian made a different choice.

The hospital treated him, performed the surgery that left him with three legs, and cared for him for another two and a half years while hoping that someone would offer him a home. No one did.

A person in Vancouver later began working with the veterinary hospital and rescue organization to see whether Fagu might be given a chance in Canada. His photograph had been online for about ten minutes when we found him.

Fagu travelled for many hours from Fuzhou through Sichuan and onward to Vancouver, making the journey without us beside him. Before he ever reached our home, many people had already chosen to keep his life moving forward.

For the first time, our grief had somewhere to go. Fagu did not replace Fi Chai. He showed us that the love Fi Chai left behind could become the strength to help another life continue.

Maji, from unseen to home

03 · Maji

Then we asked a different question.

We had never planned to have two dogs. But Fagu had tried so hard to survive that he made us believe we could also try harder. We still had room in our home, and we knew another animal was still waiting somewhere.

Which dog has been overlooked the longest, is least likely to be chosen, and most needs to leave the shelter?

The answer was Maji.

She had been born in the shelter and spent the first four years of her life there. She was not a dog people repeatedly considered and turned away. She was a dog almost no one noticed at all.

When the organization showed her to us, we did not need another option. We asked them to bring her home.

Maji made the idea of an unseen life impossible for us to ignore. She taught us that sometimes a life is not waiting to be chosen. It is waiting for someone to notice that it is there.

Fagu and Maji together at home

The people behind the journey

We did not bring them home alone.

Before Fagu and Maji reached us, veterinarians, rescuers, shelter workers, temporary carers, transport coordinators, and people across different cities had already carried part of their lives.

They kept them safe during the waiting. They arranged journeys, opened doors, shared their stories, and continued helping when the outcome was uncertain.

By the time we met Fagu and Maji, their lives had already been held by many hands. Their journeys taught us that behind one animal who reaches safety, there are often people whose care may never be fully seen.

What became Pawfect Witness™

A private relationship became something others could see.

Pawfect Witness™ did not begin as a business idea. It grew from three relationships that changed us in different ways.

Fi Chai taught us about a lifetime of companionship and the weight of losing it. Fagu showed us that grief could be carried forward as care. Maji taught us to look towards the lives that remain unseen. The people behind their journeys showed us how much compassion can exist before an animal finally reaches home.

The relationship between a person and an animal is not small, and it is not always easy to explain. It asks for time, responsibility, grief, change, and the courage to keep caring. To have known that relationship is a blessing.

Pawfect Witness™ gives that relationship a visible form, so that others who have felt the same depth of connection can recognize it and know that they are not alone.
